Basic Electrical Panel Maintenance: Contactors and Breakers

Sample article. Will be updated by the website admin.
Electrical panels power motors, pumps and production lines. Many failures give warning signs long before they stop a plant, and a routine maintenance program helps catch them early.
Routine checklist
- Visual inspection: look for discoloration, burn marks, dust and moisture inside the panel.
- Connections: check that terminals are tight; loose connections generate heat.
- Contactors: inspect contacts for pitting and listen for unusual noise when energized.
- Circuit breakers: test periodically to confirm they trip correctly.
- Cables: check insulation for cracks, heat damage and proper cable support.
Use the right tools
Thermal imaging, insulation resistance testing and breaker testing reveal problems that are invisible to the eye. Record the results so trends can be compared over time.
Safety first
Maintenance must only be carried out by qualified personnel, with the panel isolated and lockout/tagout procedures in place.
